Building house foundations starts with digging trenches to the required depth (typically 1-1.5 metres depending on ground conditions and local building regulations). The trenches are inspected by Building Control, then filled with concrete to a depth of at least 150mm, creating strip footings that will support the foundation walls. Once the concrete has cured sufficiently, foundation walls of blockwork or brick are constructed on top of the footings up to ground level, where they’re topped with a damp-proof course before the main construction begins.
Concrete foundations typically achieve sufficient strength to support light construction after 3-4 days, though they continue to cure and gain strength for up to 28 days. In the damp and cool climate we get in the UK, curing times may be extended, particularly during autumn and winter. It’s generally advisable to wait at least 7 days before building on new foundations, which allows the concrete to develop the strength needed to support the structure’s weight.
Foundations are the entire structural base that supports a building and transfers its load to the ground, while footings specifically refer to the widened bottom portion of foundations that spreads the load over a larger area. In typical UK construction, strip foundations consist of a concrete footing at the base with brick or blockwork walls rising from it. Footings are essentially a component of the wider foundation system, designed to prevent the structure from sinking or shifting by distributing weight across a broader surface.
To calculate concrete for shed foundations, multiply the length by width by depth (in metres) to get the volume in cubic metres. For a standard 8x6ft (2.4×1.8m) shed with a recommended foundation depth of 100mm (0.1m), you’ll need around 0.5 cubic metres of concrete.
