For general-purpose concrete, 20mm crushed gravel or limestone aggregate provides an excellent balance of strength and workability. Angular aggregates create stronger interlocking bonds within the concrete matrix, resulting in higher compressive strength than rounded aggregates. For exposed finishes or decorative work, smaller 10mm aggregates or speciality options like granite or coloured aggregates may be preferred, whilst for foundations and structural applications, larger 40mm aggregates can offer cost savings whilst maintaining necessary strength.
Yes, aggregates are an essential part of concrete, making up 60-80% of its volume and giving it structural strength, stability, and bulk. Without aggregates, concrete would just be cement paste, which would be incredibly expensive, prone to shrinkage and cracking, and have little in the way of compressive strength. Coarse and fine aggregates bound together with cement paste create a strong, durable composite – the versatile building material we know as concrete.
For a standard C20/25 concrete mix, you’ll need about 800-850kg (about 0.45-0.5 cubic metres) of aggregates per cubic metre of concrete. This usually needs around 400kg of coarse aggregate (gravel) and 400kg of fine aggregate (sand).
