Different strengths of concrete are needed depending on the load the foundations need to bear. Light-use foundations will use C10, while larger, multi-storey projects will need C20, which is more robust and can handle heavier loads. You will also need to consider your soil type, as soils with high levels of clay or sulphates need specific formulations.

Concrete for Shed Foundations

A concrete slab is the strongest option for a shed foundation. The resulting base will be a durable structure that will last for many years to come. Bases should be at least 75mm thick, so bear this in mind when calculating the volume of concrete you need.

Concrete for Foundations FAQs

Building house foundations starts with digging trenches to the required depth (typically 1-1.5 metres depending on ground conditions and local building regulations). The trenches are inspected by Building Control, then filled with concrete to a depth of at least 150mm, creating strip footings that will support the foundation walls. Once the concrete has cured sufficiently, foundation walls of blockwork or brick are constructed on top of the footings up to ground level, where they’re topped with a damp-proof course before the main construction begins.

Concrete foundations typically achieve sufficient strength to support light construction after 3-4 days, though they continue to cure and gain strength for up to 28 days. In the damp and cool climate we get in the UK, curing times may be extended, particularly during autumn and winter. It’s generally advisable to wait at least 7 days before building on new foundations, which allows the concrete to develop the strength needed to support the structure’s weight.

Foundations are the entire structural base that supports a building and transfers its load to the ground, while footings specifically refer to the widened bottom portion of foundations that spreads the load over a larger area. In typical UK construction, strip foundations consist of a concrete footing at the base with brick or blockwork walls rising from it. Footings are essentially a component of the wider foundation system, designed to prevent the structure from sinking or shifting by distributing weight across a broader surface.

Foundation costs in the UK usually range from £100-£135 per square metre for standard strip foundations, including materials, labour and excavation. For a small extension with 20 square metres of foundations, expect to pay £2,000-£2,700. Deeper foundations to account for poor ground conditions, sloping sites, or areas with clay soils will increase costs significantly, potentially adding 30-50% to the standard price.

To calculate concrete for shed foundations, multiply the length by width by depth (in metres) to get the volume in cubic metres. For a standard 8x6ft (2.4×1.8m) shed with a recommended foundation depth of 100mm (0.1m), you’ll need around 0.5 cubic metres of concrete. Add an extra 10% to account for ground variations and wastage. Our concrete calculator page will help you work out exactly the volume you need.

To calculate concrete needed for foundations, multiply the length by width by depth (all in metres) to get the volume in cubic metres. For a typical residential extension with strip foundations measuring 10 metres long, 0.6 metres wide and 0.25 metres deep, you would need 1.5 cubic metres of concrete. Add around 10% extra to account for ground variations and wastage, and ensure you don’t run short. Our concrete calculator page will help you work out exactly the volume you need.

A volumetric concrete mixer typically needs about 3-4 metres of width and 10-12 metres of length for safe operation and manoeuvring on-site. The vehicle needs enough overhead clearance (about 4 metres) to avoid things like trees or power lines. For tight spaces, please discuss with our team beforehand, as our experienced drivers can often work with more limited spaces when necessary.
